Irene Elisabeth Oberstenfeld nació y creció en la ciudad de Hamburgo en Alemania donde egresó de la carrera de Psicología. Posteriormente a través de diversos cursos continuó su formación como psicoterapeuta y se inició en el budismo y la meditación.
En 1977, con la noticia de una herencia familiar y motivada por conocer el mundo, decidió hacer un viaje a México en compañía de una amiga, después de viajar por algunas ciudades norteamericanas y de recorrer algunas zonas del norte mexicano, las amigas, decididas a llegar a Guatemala, se detuvieron para hacer un descanso de dos días en San Cristóbal de Las Casas, un pueblo provinciano perdido en las montañas del sureste de Chiapas y ubicado en los confines de México. "Desde mi primer día en México supe que se me impondría la necesidad de cuestionar todo lo que anteriormente había aprendido, pensado y sentido hasta ese momento; que este país me forzaría a reevaluar lo que conocía hasta entonces. No sabía en ese momento que México llegaría a remodelar mi vida".
Tampoco imaginó entonces que aquella parada en su viaje cambiaría su vida. En San Cristóbal conoció a Gabriel Suárez, un fotógrafo mexicano que había llegado a vivir al pueblo unos años antes, aquel encuentro fué desicivo "Entre los cohetes y la ebriedad patrióticos para celebrar la Independencia mexicana, el 15 de septiembre, conocí a mi futuro marido y todos mis planes se desbarataron".
Irene y Gabriel pronto se casaron. Con la dificultad del idioma y sin posibilidades de practicar su profesión en su nuevo hogar, Kiki, pseodónimo de Irene desde su niñez, comenzó a pintar como una forma de pasar el tiempo, sin imaginar que convertiría en su mayor pasión. Unos años después la pareja tenía tres hijos y había iniciado un proyecto que se convertiría en ito para la historia cultural de la región: La Galería, un café-restaurante y tienda-galería de arte, que pronto se volvió el lugar de encuentro de investigadores, arqueólogos, escritores, artistas y viajeros de toda nacionalidad y personalidades, comerciantes y habitantes locales que por primera vez convivían y se encontraban en un mismo lugar.
La obra artistica de Kiki poco a poco fué madurando en recursos narrativos y estilisticos, autobiográfica muchas veces y cercana y universal en sus temas, convirtió la cotidianeidad y la experimentación plástica en elementos constantes de búsqueda. Técnicas como el grabado en cobre, el bordado, el collage, la acuarela y el acrílico, se convirtieron en recusos habituales de su extensa obra. La cultura mexicana también jugó un papel fundamental en sus creaciones, el colorido de los textiles y de las calles, la algarabía y la alegría de sus pueblos, se revelaron en el alma colorida de su paleta y en la riqueza diversa de sus texturas.
Caracterizada por su aparente sencillez, poco a poco fue surgiendo un universo de texturas, personajes y temáticas que se convirtieron en el sello que hace tan peculiar y original el arte de Kiki.
En los años noventa unos amigos estadounidenses que conocían la obra de Kiki le propusieron la creación de una linea de productos con su arte para comercializarse en los Estados Unidos. La linea pronto tuvo éxito y permitió a la artista dar a conocer su trabajo en otros países como Japón y al mismo tiempo, generar una forma de comercializar su obra haciéndola accesible a mercados y consumidores diversos. Años después nacería gracias a aquella apuesta Kikimundo.
Desde sus inicios, la narrativa siempre ha estado presente en su obra plástica, a través de frases y titulos que acompañan sus pinturas, Kiki crea mensajes que enfatizan el sentido de sus creaciones y que se convierten en potentes vehículos de comunicación. A menudo también algunos de sus cuadros han dado pié a la creación de series e historias que se han convertido en cuentos y libros.
Hace unos años Kiki regresó a su trabajo como terapeuta, esta experiencia de contacto con las problemáticas de las personas y el enterarse de que sufría un padecimiento degenerativo de la vista incurable, la impulsaron a la creación de una obra aún más comprometida. La violencia hacia las mujeres, el apoyo a personas con discapacidad, el cuidado del medio ambiente, los valores éticos y los derechos de niños y adolescentes se convirtieron en algunas de las temáticas presentes en su trabajo artístico y social.
Hoy en día, apesar de las dificultades que enfreta debido a su padecimiento, Kiki sigue realizando ilustraciones y collages. Con el apoyo y la inspiración de iniciativas propias y de otras personas, sus imágenes y mensajes continúan llegando a nuevos contextos y lugares, a través de la realización de murales de gran formato en espacios públicos y de la creación de materiales didácticos a disposición de centros educativos, de formación y de sencibilización, su obra se ha convertido en un instrumento de cambio y transformación social. Kiki es también parte activa de diversos grupos de apoyo, colaboración y desarrollo de propuestas sociales y comunitarias que hacen hoy de Kikimundo una empresa con compromiso social y un semillero creativo y productivo que beneficia a diversos grupos y comunidades.
Más allá de los temas que aborda su obra y de los recursos estéticos que emplea, el arte de Kiki es un canto a la vida, una invitación para percibir el mundo con esperanza, para romper las fronteras impuestas por el racismo, el clacismo, la violencia y el temor e ir a la búsqueda de un mundo más justo y solidario, un mundo donde quepan muchos mundos.

Was born and grew up in the city of Hamburg in Germany were she finished her university studies in Psychology. Later in her life, though different courses, she continued her formation as a psychotherapist and immersed her self into budism and meditation.
In 1977, with the news of a family inheritance, and motivated by seeing the world, Kiki decided to make a trip to Mexico with the company of a friend. After being in a lot of mexican cities and places in the north of the country, they started to go south with the objective to get to Guatemala. Very close to the border with Guatemala, they decided to make a stop in San Cristobal de Las Casas, a little colonial town, lost in the high mountains of Chiapas, she wrote: ´´Since my first day in Mexico, i knew i would be faced to question everything i had learned, felt and thought in Germany, that this country would force me to revaluate everything i knew till then. I did not know at that time, how much Mexico would reshape my life´´.
She did not imagine back then that stop in her trip would change her life. In San Cristobal she met Gabriel Suárez, a mexican photographer who had arrived to town a few years before, that encounter was decisive: ‘’Within the fire works and the effusive patriotic celebrations of Mexican Independency, the 15th of September, i met my future husband, and all my current plans fell apart’’.
Kiki and Gabriel soon got married. With the barrier of language, and without possibilities of practicing her profession in her new home, Kiki started painting as a way to pass time, without imagining it would become her greatest passion. A few years later, they got three kids, and they had started a project, which would later become an important stone in the cultural history of that place, and named it ‘’La Galería’’. It was a Caffe-Bar with Restaurant and a store with an Art Gallery, which soon became the meeting point for investigators, archeologists, writers, artists and all kind of travellers from many nationalities and personalities, and also the local people, which for the first time had a place to meet and interact with each other.
Kiki´s art started to flourish with narrative resources and styles, many times autobiographic but intimate and universal with her different topics. She transformed daily life with plastic experimentation to create elements of constant search. Techniques such as copper engraving, weaving, collage, water and acrylic colours, started to be common resources in the creation of her art. Mexican Culture also had a fundamental part in her creations, the colourful and diverse fabrics made by the native locals, the streets, the mess and the joy of the towns in Mexico, had its revolution in the colourful soul of her palette, same way as in the diversity of her textures.
Characterised by its apparent simple style, her art started to create a universe of textures, characters and themes which became the soul of what makes kiki´s art so peculiar and original.
In the nineties some friends offered her to create a line of selected products with her art printed on them, with the objective to commercialise it in the United States. The line had quick success, and opened a lot of doors for her art to reach more people, and also sell it in a more accessible way to reach other markets. Thanks to this approach, several years after, Kiki and his Son, Daniel, created ‘’Kikimundo’’.
Since her beginnings narrative had always been present in her art, through little texts and tittles it has kept constant company to her paintings. Kiki creates messages, which emphasise the meaning of her creations and transform it in strong vehicles of communication. Its common that a single picture serves as inspiration to create many stories which have ended making several books.
A few years ago, Kiki started to work as a psychotherapist, and the experience of being in contact with the many problems of people and finding out she suffered from a degenerative eye disease which has no treatment, pushed her to create something with more compromise. Violence against women, support to people with disabilities, taking care of the environment, promoting ethic values and children´s rights, all became some of the themes present in her artistic and social work.
Today, dealing with the progressive loss of her sight, Kiki continues making illustrations and collages. With the support and inspiration from other peoples and her own initiatives, her images and teachings keep arriving to new contexts and people, through making big format murals in public spaces, creating didactic materials and putting them at disposal of educative, formative or sensitive projects, her work has become an instrument of social change and transformation. kiki is also an active part of several support groups, as well as part of the development of several social initiatives.
With all this Kikimundo has grown to be a business dedicated and compromised with society and environment, it also makes Kikimundo like rich soil where creativity and productivity benefit several groups and communities.
Beyond the themes and the aesthetic resources that Kiki´s work uses, Kiki´s art is a song to life, an invitation to perceive the world with hope, to break the borders imposed by racism, violence and fear, and go in search for a world with more justice and solidarity, a world that can have a lot of worlds within.
